Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI food analysis work?

Take a photo of your meal and the AI identifies each food item and estimates its nutritional content within seconds. The system recognizes thousands of foods, including mixed dishes and restaurant meals. Providing context like portion sizes or ingredient details improves accuracy. Each analysis returns calories, protein, carbs, and fat per item.

How accurate are the nutrition estimates?

AI-powered estimates are generally within 10-20% of actual values for most common foods. Accuracy is highest for single-ingredient items and standard portions. Mixed dishes, sauces, and hidden oils can introduce more variance. For medical or dietary conditions, always consult a registered dietitian or healthcare provider and verify critical values independently.

Is Nourli accurate for home-cooked meals?

Home-cooked meals are well supported. The AI analyzes individual visible ingredients and estimates portions. For best results, photograph the meal from above with good lighting and mention key ingredients or cooking methods in the description. You can also edit any estimated value after logging to match your recipe exactly.

Can I track food without taking photos?

Yes. Tap "Manual Entry" when adding food to enter a food name, calories, and macros by hand. You can also search from your recently logged foods for quick re-logging. Manual entry is useful for packaged items with nutrition labels or when you already know the exact values.

How do I edit a food entry?

Tap any logged food entry to open the details sheet. From there you can adjust the food name, portion size, and individual macro values (calories, protein, carbs, fat). Changes save instantly. You can also delete the entry entirely and re-log it if needed.

Can I log multiple items in one photo?

Yes. When your photo shows a full meal with multiple items, the AI identifies each component separately. You get individual nutrition breakdowns per food item, which you can edit independently. This works for plates with several dishes, lunch boxes, and restaurant meals with sides.

What if the AI gets the food wrong?

Tap the entry and correct the food name, portion, or nutrition values. The system is designed for easy corrections - any field can be edited after logging. If a particular food is consistently misidentified, try photographing it with better lighting or adding a text description alongside the photo.

How does Nourli compare to MyFitnessPal?

MyFitnessPal relies on a user-submitted database where you search and select foods manually. Nourli uses AI to analyze a photo of your actual meal, so you skip the search-and-select process entirely. Nourli also includes a personal AI nutrition coach and a strict zero photo retention privacy policy. Both apps track calories and macros, but the input method is fundamentally different.

How does Nourli compare to other AI calorie trackers?

Nourli differentiates through three key areas: AI model quality (using the latest models, not fixed to a single provider), privacy (zero photo retention - images processed in memory and never stored), and an integrated AI nutrition coach that provides personalized guidance beyond just calorie counting. Most AI trackers store your photos on their servers.

What AI model does Nourli use?

Nourli uses the latest available AI models for food recognition and nutrition estimation, and is not locked to any single provider. This means the accuracy improves over time as newer models become available. The AI coach similarly uses state-of-the-art language models to provide personalized nutrition guidance based on your logged data.

How do I get the best results from photo analysis?

Photograph your meal from directly above with decent lighting. Make sure all items on the plate are visible and not overlapping too much. If your dish has ingredients the AI cannot see (like oil in a stir-fry or cheese melted inside), mention them in the description field. The clearer the photo and the more context you provide, the closer the estimates will be.

Can Nourli scan barcodes?

Barcode scanning is not currently available. Nourli focuses on AI photo analysis, which works for any food including meals without packaging. For packaged items, you can photograph the nutrition label or use manual entry to log the exact values. Barcode scanning is under consideration for a future update.

How do I set up my nutrition goals?

Go to Goals in the main navigation. Enter your profile information - age, height, weight, sex, and activity level - and Nourli calculates personalized calorie and macro targets. You can override any calculated value with a custom target. Goals can be updated anytime as your needs change.

How are my calorie targets calculated?

Nourli uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, a clinically validated formula that factors in age, height, weight, sex, and activity level to calculate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is then adjusted based on your goal: maintain, lose, or gain weight. This equation is recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the most accurate for healthy adults.

Can I set custom macro ratios?

Yes. After the initial calculation, you can manually adjust protein, carbohydrate, and fat targets in grams to match any dietary approach. Whether you follow keto, high-carb, high-protein, or zone-style macros, you have full control. Percentage-based splits are also shown for reference.

Does Nourli work for keto, vegan, or other diets?

Yes. Nourli tracks all macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat) with fully customizable targets, making it suitable for any dietary approach. The AI recognizes plant-based meals, keto-friendly dishes, and specialized diets equally well. You can set your own macro ratios to match your dietary framework exactly.

Does Nourli have an intermittent fasting tracker?

Yes. Nourli includes a full intermittent fasting timer with six built-in plans: 14:10, 16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD, and a custom option from 1 to 72 hours. The timer tracks your progress through 10 metabolic stages and shows what is happening in your body at each phase. Safety disclaimers appear automatically for longer fasts, and the AI coach adjusts its advice while you are fasting.

Can I track water intake?

Yes. Tap the add button on your Today page and select Water. You can pick from quick presets (glass, bottle, large, liter) or type a custom amount. Nourli supports both milliliters and fluid ounces based on your unit preference. Your water history is available in the History tab with daily totals and individual entries you can edit or delete.

How do I track my weight?

Tap the add button on your Today page and select Weight. Enter your current weight in kilograms or pounds depending on your settings. Each entry is timestamped and saved to your history, where you can review trends grouped by month. Your weight data also feeds into the AI coach so it can give advice based on your actual progress.

What is the burned calories tracker for?

The burned calories tracker lets you log your total daily energy expenditure from a fitness tracker or smartwatch. Tap the add button on your Today page and select Burned. Enter your total for the day and it will replace any previous entry for that date. This gives you a more complete picture of your energy balance alongside your food intake.

What kind of advice can the AI coach give?

The AI coach answers nutrition questions, suggests meal ideas based on your remaining macros for the day, explains nutritional concepts, and provides general wellness guidance. It has access to your recent food log and goals, so its responses are personalized. The coach is not a substitute for professional medical or dietary advice.

Can the AI coach help me plan meals?

Yes. Ask the coach what to eat and it will suggest meals based on how many calories and macros you have left for the day. It knows your goals, your recent food log, and your dietary preferences, so the suggestions are specific to you rather than generic. You can ask follow-up questions to refine the options.

Does the coach remember conversations?

The coach has access to your recent conversation history within each session and can reference your nutrition data and goals. For privacy, conversation history is periodically cleared. Each new session starts with your current food log and goal context, so the coach always has relevant information to work with.

Does the AI coach work during fasting?

Yes, and it is aware that you are fasting. When an active fast is running, the coach adjusts its advice accordingly. It will not suggest meals during your fasting window. You can still ask general nutrition questions or plan what to eat when your eating window opens.

Are there any daily usage limits?

Premium includes 20 AI meal analyses and 20 AI coach messages per day. That covers a full day of tracking with room to spare. Limits reset every midnight in your timezone. We actively monitor usage patterns and adjust these limits to ensure the best possible experience for everyone. As AI costs continue to evolve, we expect these to grow over time.

Is Nourli free?

Nourli offers a 7-day free trial with full access to all features, including AI food analysis and the AI nutrition coach. After the trial, a Premium subscription is required at $19.99/month. You can cancel anytime before the trial ends with no charge.

What platforms does Nourli support?

Nourli is available on iOS, Android, and web browsers. The app works on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and any modern desktop or mobile browser. Your account syncs across all devices - log a meal on your phone and see it on your tablet or desktop instantly.

How does Nourli protect my privacy?

Nourli enforces a zero photo retention policy: food photos are processed in memory for AI analysis and never stored on any server. Only the extracted nutrition data (text and numbers) is saved to your account. The service is GDPR and CCPA compliant, and you can export or delete all your data at any time from Settings.

What happens to my food photos?

Food photos are processed in memory during AI analysis and deleted immediately after. No images are saved to our servers, databases, or third-party storage. Only the resulting nutrition data (food names, calories, macros) is stored in your account. This zero photo retention policy is a core privacy commitment.

How do I export my data?

Go to Settings, then Account, then Export Data. You can download all your nutrition logs, goals, and profile information. Your data belongs to you, and under GDPR and CCPA you have the right to receive it in a portable format at any time.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open the app and go to Settings, then Account, then Manage Subscription. You can cancel at any time and retain access until the end of your current billing period. No cancellation fees apply. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, manage your subscription through their respective settings.

Can I change my email?

Yes. Go to Settings, then Account, then Change Email. Enter your new email address and confirm. You will receive a verification link at both your old and new email addresses to complete the change securely. Your food log and subscription are unaffected.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings, then Account, then Delete Account. You will need to confirm by typing "DELETE". This permanently removes all your data - food logs, goals, profile, and conversation history - from our servers. Account deletion cannot be undone. Any active subscription should be cancelled separately.
